Nov. 16, 2012
BRIDGEPORT, Pa. - George Washington men's water polo freshman Bogdan Petkovic was named the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Southern Division Rookie of the Year and also tabbed to the All-South First Team, the league announced on Thursday.
Petkovic becomes the first Colonials' player to earn the CWPA's top rookie honor. He is also just the second-ever GW freshman - first since Peter Clifford in 1994 - to garner first-team accolades, and is the program's ninth first-team honoree overall. Patrick Dodge and Daniel Tyner are the only other Colonials' freshmen to be named to an all-conference team, with both earning second-team nods in 2000 and 2010, respectively.
A native of Belgrade, Serbia, Petkovic concluded his impressive inaugural campaign with a single-season program record 96 steals while ranking third on the team with 45 goals, 24 assists and 69 points. In addition, the central defender posted a team-high 18 field blocks on the year, the third-highest single-season total in school history.
Petkovic was twice named Southern Division Rookie of the Week in 2012, garnering the first and last accolades of the season.
The CWPA Southern Division All-Conference Team is voted on by the division's 11 head coaches based on nominations from each team, with the coaches selecting 14 players for all-conference distinction.
