Men's Cross Country Team Places Second, Women Fourth at UMES Lid Lifter

PRINCESS ANNE, MD - While the top runners prepared for the Mount St. Mary's Invitational on Saturday, September 13, the rest of The George Washington University's cross country team competed at the Maryland Eastern Shore Lid Lifter on Saturday, September 6. The men's team finished second and the women's team finished fourth. The men were paced by freshman Ryan Shaver (Coatesville, PA/Coatesville), who finished sixth out of 51 runners. The women were led by freshman Bridget Skeuse (Stockton, NJ/Immaculata), who finished second out of 38. "I thought the team gave a solid effort for the first race of the season," stated head coach Deb Cane. "This event gave a lot of our runners a chance to compete and get ready for the rest of the season." Shaver finished the race in a time of 27:51.47, just behind race winner Barnabas Togam of Maryland Eastern Shore. Freshman Daniel Morgan (Danville, KY/Boyle County) finished just after Shaver in eighth place with a time of 27:55.97 followed by fellow freshman Ian Hajek (San Diego, CA/(Home Schooled) who finished in tenth place. Sophomore Phil Sherman (Greenwich, CT/Greenwich) and freshman Jeffrey Scranton (South Windsor, CT/South Windsor) rounded out the scoring for the Colonials.
On the women's side, Skeuse started her collegiate career by finishing second in a time of 19:41.15, shortly after race winner Eva Slavikova of Maryland Eastern Shore. Sophomore Olivia Schramm (Berwyn, PA/Conestoga), freshman Taylor Leavitt (Turner, ME/Leavitt Area) and senior Laura DeLucia (Manchester, NH/Central) were the next finishers for the Colonials in 16th, 17th, and 18th, respectively. Sophomore Meredith Deschenes (Watertown, CT/Taft School) was the other runner to score for the Colonials.
The Colonials will next hit the racecourse on Saturday, September 13, 2003, when they travel to Emmitsburg, MD to compete in the Mount St. Mary's Invitational.
