EMMITSBURG, MD - The George Washington University's cross country team ran their first race of the season with a full squad at the Mount St. Mary's Invitational on Saturday, September 13. The women's team finished second on the day and were led by senior Emily Jadwin (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape), who finished fourth out of 48 runners. Senior Dave Azari (Yardley, PA/Pennsbury) burst into the lead over the last 150 meters to win the men's race and help the Colonials finish fourth as a team, just eight points behind first place American, despite missing number five runner freshman Ian Hajek (San Diego, CA/(Home Schooled)), who was out with the flu.

The women's team had seven runners finish in the top 20 even without sophomore standout Lindsay Blum (Holland, PA/Council Rock), who is nursing an injury. The team was led by Jadwin's time of 19:11.10, crossing the finish line just in front of reigning Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week Bridget Skeuse (Stockton, NJ/Immaculata). Junior Trina Bolton (Avondale Estates, GA/The Lovett School) completed the 5K run in sixth place followed by juniors Mary Beth McCullough (Brentwood, TN/Father Ryan) and Erin Patton (Saline, MI/Saline), who finished in 10th and 12th place, respectively.

Azari took the 8K men's race with a time of 26:05.60. Fellow senior Darrell Andruski (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) finished fourth on the day in a time of 26:20.71. Last week's Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week Ryan Shaver (Coatesville, PA/Coatesville) was next for the Colonials in 12th place followed by freshman Daniel Morgan (Danville, KY/Boyle County) in 16th and sophomore Phil Sherman (Greenwich, CT/Greenwich) in 27th place.

The Colonials will look to improve on this week when they travel to Harrisonburg, VA to compete in the James Madison Invitational on Saturday, September 20.
