Both Men's and Women's Cross Country Teams Finish Second at James Madison Invitational
Sept. 20, 2003 HARRISONBURG, VA - The George Washington University's cross country team traveled to the James Madison Invitational on Saturday, September 20, coming away with second place finishes in both the men's and women's races. Senior Dave Azari (Yardley, PA/Pennsbury) turned in his second straight strong performance by finishing second out of 54 runners. Freshman Bridget Skeuse (Stockton, NJ/Immaculata) continued her strong season by finishing fourth out of 59, the third time this season she was the Colonials top finisher. Azari's hard work in the offseason continues to pay off, finishing the 8K course in 25:53.50, just three seconds behind race winner, Ted Herbert of James Madison. Senior Darrell Andruski (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) finished just behind Azari, in fifth place, to record his second straight top-five finish. The Colonials received strong performances from the younger members of the team as well. Freshmen Ryan Shaver (Coatesville, PA/Coatesville) and Daniel Morgan (Danville, KY/Boyle County) finished in 13th and 19th place, respectively, while sophomore Phil Sherman (Greenwich, CT/Greenwich) had another solid outing, finishing in 21st place.
The women were again led by Skeuse, who continues to show why head coach Deb Cane felt like she could be a difference maker. She finished the 5K race in 20:28.30, to lead the women to their second straight runner-up finish. Junior Trina Bolton (Avondale Estates, GA/The Lovett School) recorded her second straight top ten finish by completing the course in sixth place. Senior Emily Jadwin (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) and junior Erin Patton (Saline, MI/Saline) were the next finishers for the Colonials in ninth and 10th place, respectively, followed by sophomore Meghan Dunn (Clinton, NY/Clinton), who finished in 14th place. The women's team continues to show its depth as this second place finish came without last year's standout sophomore Lindsay Blum (Holland, PA/Council Rock) and junior Mary Beth McCullough (Brentwood, TN/Father Ryan), who suffered a foot injury towards the end of the race and was forced to drop out.
GW's runners will take a break from traveling next week and will host the George Washington Invitational at Bull Run Park in Centreville, VA on Saturday, September 27 at 10:00 a.m.
