Women's Cross Country Takes Third, Men Eighth at 9th Annual GW Invitational

CENTREVILLE, VA - Led by sophomore Mae Polhemus' (Boca Raton, FL) 14th place overall finish, the George Washington University women's cross country team placed third out of 12 teams with 112 points at its home GW Invitational on Saturday at Bull Run Park. Freshman Chris Pisano (Toms River, NJ) was the top finisher on the men's side for the Colonials notching a sixth place finish out of 141 runners in 26:06.92 to lead the team to an eighth place showing with 199 points in the ninth annual race.

Bucknell swept the Invitational as its men's and women's teams each scored 31 points to secure victories in the women's 6K and men's 8K races, respectively. The GW women were the defending champions.

Polhemus covered the redesigned, women's 6K course in 23:44.05 to lead the way for GW in a race that featured 117 runners, while senior Lindsay Blum (Holland, PA) (24:03.76) and junior Taylor Leavitt (Turner, ME) (24:13.56) were the next best finishers at 21st and 25th, respectively. Sophomore Michelle Concannon (LaGrangeville, NY) made her season debut and finished with a time of 24:25.55 to claim 31st, followed by senior Colleen McCauley (Havertown, PA) and freshman Freja Pelich (Concord, NH) in 37th and 38th, with marks of 24:46.59 and 24:53.01.

On the men's side, Pisano stayed with the lead runners the entire race to record a season and collegiate best, as well as his first top 10 finish of the year. Junior Daniel Morgan (Danville, KY), the Colonials top finisher in each of their last two meets, finished 29th in 27:04.45, while he was followed across the finish line by freshman Keith Moody (Orange, FL) in 53rd with a time of 27:32.67. Closing out the top five for the Colonials were sophomores Mark Drath (Los Angeles, CA) and Christian Woodside (Edmond, OK), with times of 28:25.34 and 28:25.74, respectively. In addition, senior Alex Kim (Scarsdale, NY) placed 98th in 29:00.25.

 

 

Frostburg State's Bonnie Axman was the individual winner on the women's side with a time of 21:39.99, while Seton Hall's Justin Wood clocked 25:41.78 to prevail in the men's race.

GW returns to action next weekend with its squad split between the Paul Short Invitational in Bethlehem, PA, and George Mason Invitational back at Bull Run Park in Centerville. Both meets are Saturday, Oct. 1, and are set to begin at 10 a.m.
