STATE COLLEGE, PA - Competing in their first major races of the season, the George Washington men's and women's cross country teams each had a tough morning on Saturday, Oct. 16, at the Penn State National XC Meet held at the University's Blue-White Golf Courses. The GW women finished 31st overall as a team out of 41 squads, while the Colonial men placed 36th out of 38 schools.

The second-ranked Providence Friars, led by All-American Kim Smith, captured their third straight women's Penn State National XC title as Smith and teammate Mary Cullen finished 1-2, while American was the winner on the men's side, boasting three finishers in the overall top 10. Penn State's Dan Mazzocco was the men's individual champion with a time of 25:27.

Senior Trina Bolton (Avondale Estates, GA) covered the women's 6K course in 23:09 to finish 136th and lead the Colonial women, who finished outside of first for the first time in six meets this season. Bolton was followed by classmate Emily Jadwin (Mt. Laurel, NJ), who placed 175th in 23:29, while a pair of freshmen, Michelle Concannon (LaGrangeville, NY) and Erynne Jones (Upland, CA), were GW's next highest finishers. Concannon clocked 23:37 for 181st, while Jones crossed the line in 23:47 for 200th.

On the men's side, sophomore Daniel Morgan (Danville, KY) finished the men's 5.2 mile course in 28:12 to claim 207th and lead the GW men for the fifth straight time in six meets. Freshman Christian Woodside (Edmond, OK) has developed into a steady No. 2 finisher for the Colonials in his debut season, as he placed 222nd overall in 28:30. Junior Phil Sherman (Greenwich, CT) turned in a solid performance to finish 255th in 29:08, while freshman Jeff Scranton (South Windsor, CT) placed 260th with a mark of 29:16.

 

 

Both squads will have a week off from competition to rest and prepare for the Atlantic 10 Championships, which take place on Saturday, Oct. 30, at 10 a.m. in Pittsburgh, PA. Duquesne will serve as host of the meet.
