Men's Cross Country Team Places Fourth, Women Third at Maryland Invitational
Oct. 20, 2002
COLLEGE PARK, MD - The GW Cross Country team turned in an excellent performance at the Maryland Invitational on October, 19. Junior Darrell Andruski (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) finished ninth out of 60 runners to lead a men's squad, minus two of its top three runners due to illness, to a fourth place finish out of seven teams. Freshman Lindsay Blum (Holland, PA/Council Rock) continued her impressive season by also finishing ninth out of 89 runners to help the women finish third out of seven teams. In the absence of David Talbird (Lookout Mountain, TN/McCallie School) and Dave Azari (Yardley, PA/Pennsbury), the team needed Andruski to perform at a high level. He didn't disappoint, finishing the College Park course in 26 minutes flat, under a minute after race winner, Frank Malpigli of American University. Senior Matt Kascak (Summerville, SC/Summerville) is continuing to work himself back into form and finished 23rd for the Colonials. Freshman Phil Sherman (Greenwich, CT/Greenwich), sophomore Art Rowbotham (Lakeland, FL/Portsmouth Abbey) and senior Rob Wolcheski (East Haven, CT/East Haven) finished 29th, 35th and 36th, respectively, to secure fourth place. Blum finished 30 seconds off the pace set by Samia Akbar of American University, with a time of 6:10.9. Sophomore Mary Beth McCullough (Brentwood, TN/Father Ryan) had another excellent weekend finishing 13th followed by fellow sophomores Emily Jadwin (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) and Erin Patton (Saline, MI/Saline). Trina Bolton (Avondale Estates, GA/The Lovett School) completed the scoring that landed the women in third place. The teams will spend the next two weeks preparing for the Atlantic 10 Championships on November 2 in Pittsburgh, PA.
