Pittsburgh, PA - The George Washington men's and women's crossed country teams both finished 10th in Saturday's Atlantic 10 Championships, on a wet and muddy course, where several runners fell at the start. Sophomore Audrey Noonan led the way for the women while junior Joe Altenau paced the men's squad. La Salle swept the race winning both the men's and women's events and their top runners; seniors Rachel Papin and Sean Quigley both captured the individual titles.
Noonan paced the Colonials finishing in seventh place overall out of 138 runners. Her time of 18:19.2 was the fastest ever for a Colonial in the Atlantic 10 Championships. With the top 15 finish, Noonan was selected to the 2006 Women's All-Atlantic 10 Team. Junior Mae Polhemus placed second for GW in 19:36.05, 44th overall. Graduate student Kate Neeper took third for the Colonials after having a rough start to the race and attempting to sprint back to the front. Neeper finished in 54th place in 19:44.85. Senior Taylor Leavitt came in next for GW in 58th place overall, covering the sloppy course in 19:46.70. Freshman Meaghan Smith rounded out the top five finishing in 72nd place, clocking in at 20:10.0. Also in the top seven for the Colonials were junior Michelle Concannon and freshman Caitlin Lowery, who both had rocky starts to the race and were buried in the back, but eventually closed the gap.
For the men, Altenau carried the squad once again, finishing the 8k course in 26:41.40, good for 39th place overall out of 146. Senior Daniel Morgan followed in 48th place, clocking in at 26:58.2. Robbie Lockhart, in just his second career collegiate meet came in third for GW in 51st place, covering the course in 26:59.60. Sophomore Kieth Moody came in just after Lockhart in 27:02.15, 52nd place overall. Sophomore Collin Stevenson rounded out the top five for GW in just his second meet of the season. He finished in 56th place overall, in 27:08.7. Freshman Stephen Rutgers and junior Mark Drath finished sixth and seventh for the Colonials respectively in times of 27:36.6 and 27:44.7, good for 76th and 79th place.
The Colonials will be off next weekend and will close out their season at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional in Lock Haven, PA. Last season at the regional meet, the women took 21st; while the men took 22nd, but Coach Brian Beil is expecting a much better turnout this season with a week off and a young, talented squad.
