Colonials Open Cross Country Season In Mount St. Mary's
George Washington records third and fourth place finishes to open 2009 season

The 2009 George Washington Men's Cross Country team opened their 2009 season on Friday afternoon on the campus of Mount St. Mary's College and ran strong for a third place finish among the six competing schools. Junior Andrew Zahornacky paced the Colonials with a time of 16:03.77, which was good enough for 11th place of 67 runners in the meet and fellow junior Zach Borenstein was right behind with a time of 16:11.94 to finish 15th place.
On the women's side, a pair of freshmen paced the Colonials in a race where head coach Brian Beil held out top runner Megan Hogan. Newcomers Heather Stevens and Julia Weir finished 20th and 21st place with very close times of 20:01 and 20:05 respectively. A third freshman rounded out the top three for the Colonials when Alexandra Smargiassi finished with a time of 20:16 to finish in 23rd place. The women's squad finished fourth out of six schools in the race.
The Colonials will return to the track on Saturday, Sept. 12 when they head to Annapolis, MD to take part in the Navy Invitational.
