Volkmar, a native of Rochester, NY, went to Hilton High School where he was three-sport star. He then chose Le Moyne College where he was a four-year varsity letterman for the baseball team. Graduating in the spring of 2001, he finished amongst the career leaders in home runs, made the All-MAAC Tournament Team and played the entire 2000 season without making an error behind the plate. Volkmar also was part of the 1998 MAAC Champion Dolphins, eventually losing to Harvard in the NCAA Tournament.

Between his time at Le Moyne College and GW, Volkmar was the assistant baseball coach at Onondaga Community College and the team strength coordinator while conducting personal training at the Gold's Gym in Syracuse, NY.

"The game of baseball has become a strong man's game. Mike is the first baseball-only strength and conditioning coordinator we've ever had. His knowledge of the human body, combined with his knowledge of what it takes to succeed in college baseball, has enabled him to develop our players into superior athletes." - Head Coach Tom Walter
