GW Baseball Survives Rally In Season Opener, Beat Georgia Southern 8-6
Feb. 18, 2011
STATESBORO, GA Sophomore Paul Pakan provided a game-winning RBI double in the top of the 10th inning to propel the George Washington baseball team to an 8-6 victory over Georgia Southern in the opening game of the 2011 season. GW (1-0) staked starter Brian Derner a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning after a Brett Bowers RBI single. The Colonials would tack on four runs over the next four innings to take a 5-0 lead but Georgia Southern stormed back and trailed just 6-5 entering the ninth inning. Derner pitched three innings, giving up just one hit while striking out six batters. The start of the ninth inning looked promising for GW, as they loaded the bases with two outs. The Colonials were unable to convert this opportunity into insurance runs and Georgia Southern capitalized, using a Victor Roache solo home run to tie the game and force extra innings. With two outs in the top of the 10th inning freshman Owen Beightol singled up the middle. Senior Brendon Kelliher extended the inning by reaching on a fielding error. This set the stage for Pakan, who lined a 1-2 pitch to deep center field to drive in the game winning runs. Pakan finished the night 2-for-4 with three RBI and two walks. Graduate student Chris Keiper, who gave up the tying home run in the ninth, settled down and worked a 1-2-3 bottom half of the 10th for his first win as a Colonial. The Colonials will send senior Joe Richardson to the mound against Josh Adams in game two, first pitch is scheduled for 2:30 pm on Saturday afternoon.
