Colonials Drop Final Two Games of Series to Eagles

STATESBORO, GA - The George Washington University baseball team (2-2) closed out its three-game series against Georgia Southern University (2-4) Sunday afternoon falling 6-3 at J.I. Clements Stadium.
Colonials' third baseman Geoff Milsom (New York, NY / Notre Dame) doubled on the games first pitch and would come around to score and then singled in a run in the top of the second to put GW on top 2-0.
But a lead-off solo home run from Eagles' designated hitter Derrick Smith (3) and an RBI single from shortstop Jeremy Beckman tied the score 2-2.
After GW first baseman Ryan Roberson (Silver Spring, MD / James H. Blake) doubled in a run to give the Colonials a 3-2 edge in the top of the third, GSU hung a four-spot on GW in the bottom half of the inning highlighted by third baseman Logan Phillips' three-run home run (2) to set the score at 6-3.
Eagles' starter Josh Lairsey (1-0) was solid in his six innings of work, striking out seven and allowing two earned runs as he took the win.
GW starter LHP Dan Sullivan (Stony Point, NY / North Rockland) (1-1) was hit hard for five runs in 2.1 innings as he suffered the loss.
Colonials' RHP Derrick Lutz shoock-off Smith's home run and settled down and struck out six in 5.1 innings of relief.
After taking the first game of the series Friday, GW dropped the next two against the Eagles.
GW plays two mid-week games this week as they travel to Norfolk, VA on Tuesday to play Old Dominion University at 3:00 pm and face James Madison University in Harrisonburg, VA on Wednesday beginning at 2:30 pm.
