HAMMOND, La. - The George Washington baseball team took an early lead but could not hang on down the stretch, falling 6-1 to Southeastern Louisiana in the series opener on Friday afternoon at Alumni Field.

GW (1-1) grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning when senior Owen Beightol hit an infield single, stole second and later scored when freshman Kevin Mahala reached on an error.

Colonials' starter Luke Staub allowed one earned run in four innings of work before sophomore Bobby LeWarne entered in relief to start the fifth inning with the game tied 1-1.

LeWarne surrendered only a pair of hits through his first two innings of work before running into trouble in the seventh, when the Lions took advantage of a fielding error which led to five runs. LeWarne was tagged with the loss after allowing three runs (two earned) on three hits with three walks in two innings of work.

Freshman Andrew Piccin was sharp in his collegiate debut, pitching 1.2 scoreless innings of relief.

GW and Southeastern Louisiana will play the middle game of this three-game set on Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m. ET. Sophomore LHP Max Kaplow will get the start for the Colonials against Lions' RHP Tate Scioneaux.
