Feb. 23, 2014
HAMMOND, La. - Senior Owen Beightol recorded his third consecutive multi-hit game but the George Washington baseball team fell, 9-3, at Southeastern Louisiana on Sunday evening at Alumni Field.
GW (1-3) held an early 2-0 lead after plating two runs in the top of the second inning, scoring both runs on a pair of Southeastern Louisiana (5-2) errors.
Freshman Kevin Mahala was hit by a pitch with one out and advanced to second on a single from classmate Bobby Campbell. During the next at-bat, a double-steal attempt resulted in a throwing error, allowing Mahala to cross the plate for the first run of the game. After the second out was recorded via strikeout, sophomore Matthieu Robert reached on a throwing error which allowed Campbell to score to give the Colonials a 2-0 lead.
The Lions got a run back in the bottom of the second inning on an RBI single by Kevin Carr and tied the game in the third on a run-scoring single from Jacob Seward.
The Colonials responded in the fifth with an RBI double from Beightol to move ahead 3-2.
Southeastern Louisiana chased GW starter Jacob Williams with three runs in the fifth inning to take a 5-3 lead. Williams allowed five runs (four earned) on six hits in 4.1 innings of work.
The Lions added four runs in the seventh inning to extend the lead to 9-3, and their bullpen surrendered just two hits the rest of the way to seal the victory.
Campbell finished 3-for-4 with a run scored while Beightol was 2-for-5 with an RBI. Senior Colin Milon threw two scoreless innings of relief after allowing a double in the seventh, where the runs were charged to Williams after he exited the ball game.
GW will open a four-game homestand on Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. against Delaware State. The Colonials will play 16 of their next 19 games at Barcroft Park over the next month with only road trips to Virginia (March 4), Delaware State (March 18) and Georgetown (March 19) on the docket.
