Tom Shanley's 5 RBI Not Enough In Baseball's 11-7 Loss To #4 UNC
Feb. 24, 2006
CHAPEL HILL, NC - The George Washington University baseball team (1-1) opened its three-game series at the #4 University of North Carolina (5-0) Friday afternoon with an 11-7 defeat at Boshamer Stadium. Preseason All-American RHP Robert Woodard (2-0) started for the Tar Heels and went 6.0 innings, allowing no runs, six hits and struck out four to earn the win. The Colonials countered with RHP Derrik Lutz (0-1) who was not sharp in his 2006 debut, allowing three earned runs, six hits, two walks and three wild pitches in five innings as he suffered the loss. GW trailed 11-0 after six innings before third baseman Tom Shanley (Stanfordville, NY/Pine Plains) cut the deficit to 11-4 with a grand slam home run (1) in the seventh inning and shortstop Michael Parker (Newton, MA / Newton South) made it 11-6 with a two-run double in the eighth. The Tar Heels got things going in the third inning when they jumped out to a 4-0 lead. Right fielder Matt Spencer's three-run home run (2) capped an inning that witnessed three wild pitches and an error. Shortstop Josh Horton's second RBI of the game helped UNC open up a 7-0 advantage in the fifth inning. Horton went 3-for-3 with two RBI and three runs scored in the contest. UNC hung another four-run frame in the sixth inning as first baseman Chad Flack followed an RBI single and two walks with a bases loaded double to send three more Tar Heels across the plate, making the count 11-0. Trailing 4-0 through four and half innings, the game was still in GW's reach as the Colonials threatened in the third, fourth and fifth innings but left six runners on base in the three frames. Overall, GW stranded 10 runners. Colonials' freshman Tim Reeves (Cumming, GA / North Forsyth) went 2-for-4 with a double and run scored and right fielder Gavin Swanson (Reisterstown, MD/Calvert Hall) produced two hits for the second straight game.
The game's starting pitchers were no strangers to each other as Lutz and Woodard were teammates during the summer on the Chatham A's of the Cape Code League. Game two of the series is set for Saturday at 1:00 pm. GW will send sophomore RHP Brian Frazier (Allentown, PA/Emmaus) to the mound. -GW- |
