Baseball Falls at George Mason, 14-7
March 4, 2008
FAIRFAX, VA - George Washington battled back from an early 6-2 deficit to tie George Mason at seven runs apiece in the top of the seventh inning, but eventually fell 14-7 in a non-conference baseball game at Spuhler Field in Fairfax, VA, Tuesday afternoon.
Senior Charlie Kruer (Old Bidge, NJ/Old Bridge) paced the Colonials, smashing his first two home runs of the young season. The outfielder now has 28 career home runs, putting him in a tie with Joe Michalski (2002-05) for 10th all-time at GW. Justin Bour, who went 3-for-3 with a home run, two doubles, five RBI and three runs scored, led the Patriots offensively. As a team George Mason slugged 15 hits and recorded 14 RBI.
The loss dropped GW to 5-2 and marks the first time they have suffered consecutive losses in the 2008 season. George Mason improved to 2-6.
The home team jumped out to an early 6-2 lead after three innings of play, due in large part to Ryan Soares, who recorded an RBI-double in the second and an RBI-single in the third. Soares, the second baseman, ended the day 4-for-4 with four RBI and two runs scored.
GW began to battle back in the top of the third. Tom Zebroski (Port Washington, NY/Paul Schreiber) doubled into left-center, and in the process extended his hit-streak to seven games. Kruer followed with a blast to right-center, making it 2-2. After the Patriots put four runs on the board in the bottom of the third, the Colonials added three more runs in the fourth.
Andrew Abokhair (Ashburn, VA/Broad Run) and Tim Reeves (Cumming, GA/North Forsyth) led-off with back-to-back singles, putting runners on first and second with nobody out for Doug Eizen (Philadelphia, PA/The Haverford School), who moved both runners up with a sacrifice bunt. Abokhair came around to score on a groundout and Reeves then followed when Matt Boyd (Rockville, MD/Magruder) singled into left field. Boyd, the starting centerfielder, then stole second and third and scored on an error made by the George Mason catcher to make it 6-5.
GW eventually fought all the way back and managed to pull even in the top of the seventh inning, when shortstop Sean Rockey (Sammamish, WA/Eastlake/Columbia Basin CC) singled into right field to drive in Reeves.
That tie would be short-lived, however, as George Mason scored four in the seventh and three more in the eighth, putting the game out of reach. Justin Bour recorded an RBI-double in the bottom of the seventh and then laced a three-run home run in the eighth frame.
Shawn Griffith (1-0) pitched the final three innings of the game for George Mason and struck out five to pick up his first win of the season. Chris Davis (Richmond, BC/Burnett Secondary) suffered the loss for GW as he pitched 1 1/3 innings. Rockey, Reeves, Kruer and Boyd all recorded two-hits each for the Colonials. Reeves was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and is now batting .524 through the first seven games (11-for-21).
GW is 36-50 all-time against George Mason. The two teams will meet again this season, April 8, at 3:00 p.m., at Barcroft Park in Arlington, VA.
The Colonials host William & Mary tomorrow, Wednesday, Mar. 5, at 2:30 p.m., at Barcroft Park.
