March 5, 2006
RICHMOND, VA - Starter RHP Josh Wilkie (2-1) allowed one earned run, struck out six and walked one in 7.0 innings to carry George Washington University (3-6) to a 4-2 victory over Virginia Commonwealth University (5-6) Sunday afternoon at The Diamond. The win gives the Colonials the series, two games to one. GW centerfielder Matt Owens (Fayetteville, GA / Fayette County) broke a 2-2 tie with the eventual game-winning RBI in the seventh inning with a base hit that drove in second baseman Mickey Shupin (Sea Girt, NJ / Wall). Colonials' catcher Andrew Abokhair (Ashburn, VA / Broad Run) made it 4-2 in the eighth inning when his RBI triple brought home third baseman Tom Shanley (Stanfordville, NY / Pine Plains). RHP Cody Eppley started for VCU and was solid in six innings, allowing two earned runs, four hits, struck out six and did not walk a batter. Reliever RHP Brett Walker (1-2) replaced Eppley in the seventh and gave up GW's go-ahead run and was tagged with the loss. GW brought on RHP Derrik Lutz (Grantville, PA / Lower Dauphin) with two outs in the eighth inning to record the final four outs as he earned his first save since his freshman year, when he set GW's single season save total with 12. GW had fallen behind 2-0 in the fourth inning when Rams' second baseman Scott Sizemore led off the frame with a double and scored on first baseman Jared Bolden's triple. Bolden then came across on a fielding error to put the Colonials in a two-run hole.
Overall Bolden collected a single, double and triple in four at-bats. GW tied the game in the fifth inning after centerfielder Matt Owens (Fayetteville, GA / Fayette County) doubled to lead off the inning and scored on a two-out single from first baseman Tim Reeves (Cumming, GA / North Forsyth) to pull within 2-1. Shortstop Michael Parker (Newton, MA / Newton) followed with an RBI double that set the score at 2-2. Owens went 2-for-4 in the contest with a double, a run scored and the game-winning RBI. |
