Baseball Tops UMBC, 5-3

ARLINGTON, Va. - The George Washington baseball team won for the fifth time in its last six games with a 5-3 triumph over UMBC on Tuesday afternoon at Tucker Field at Barcroft Park.

GW got solid pitching performances from sophomore Jaret Edwards, junior Pat Knight and junior Will Kobos to pave the way to victory. The Colonials also got big offensive production from reigning A-10 Player of the Week Matt Cosentino and sophomore shortstop Nate Fassnacht.

Key Stats

  • Edwards got the start for GW and struck out five over 4.2 innings of work. He allowed a pair runs on four hits with two walks in the no decision.
  • Knight earned his first victory at the Division I level with 3.1 innings of dominant relief. He allowed only one base runner in the outing while striking out three without issuing a walk.
  • Kobos picked up his second save of the season with a spotless ninth.
  • Cosentino (2 H, 1 2B, 1 RBI) and Fassnacht (2 H, 3 R, 1 BB) both picked up multiple-hit outings for the Colonials.

  • Bottom 7: Fassnacht led off with a bunt single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and to third on a groundout. He then scored on a dropped third strike wild pitch to put GW on top. (GW 3, UMBC 2
