GW Baseball Falls, 11-1, at William & Mary
Oswald, Bowers, Gelling Combine for Seven Hits
March 7, 2012
WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - Seniors Stephen Oswald and Brett Bowers combined for five hits but the Colonials stranded 12 men on base as the George Washington baseball team fell to host William & Mary, 11-1, on Wednesday afternoon at Plumeri Park.
GW (2-8) trailed 4-0 after the first two innings as William & Mary (8-5) hit two home runs off of Colonials' starter Craig Lejeune.
Senior Luke Mirabella entered the game in the fourth inning and pitched 3.1 innings of scoreless relief to keep the Colonials in the game. Mirabella allowed just one hit while recording two strikeouts.
The Colonials had opportunities with runners in scoring position in the third, fourth and fifth innings but were unable to take advantage of the momentum.
Senior Stephen Oswald got the Colonials on the board in the top of the seventh with a RBI single through the right side to cut the deficit to 4-1 but the Tribe pushed seven runs across in the final two innings to clinch the 11-1 victory.
Oswald finished the afternoon 3-for-5 while Bowers and junior Kyle Gelling finished with two hits apiece.
The Colonials return to action this weekend with a pair of doubleheaders against Cornell at Catholic University's Talbot Field. Each doubleheader will feature two seven-inning contests and will start at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
