March 15, 2007
ARLINGTON, VA - George Washington (5-11) hit five home runs, including two each by Gavin Swanson (Reisterstown, MD/Calvert Hall College) and Michael Parker (Newtown, MA/Newtown South), as they cruised past Georgetown 17-9 at Barcroft Park on Thursday. The 17 runs scored by GW matches their output from when they defeated Hartford 17-0 in 2005.
The Colonials, who started the season 1-11, have won their past four games, including all three at home this week.
Freshman pitcher Ryan Lapointe (Somersworth, NH/Phillips Exeter Academy), making just the second start of his career, earned his first collegiate win. LaPointe (1-0) surrendered just one run in his five innings of work and struck out six Georgetown batters as he lowered his ERA by more than five runs.
Hoya pitcher Tim Adleman (1-1) was tagged with the loss after giving up eight runs, all earned, through three innings.
Georgetown scored one run in the first on an RBI-double by Matt Harrigan, but their slim lead would be short-lived.
In the bottom of the second, GW put two on the board with a Gavin Swanson home run to left field that scored two runs and gave his team a lead that they would not relinquish.
The Colonials added six more runs in the next inning, three of which came on Swanson's second home run of the game (3), this time a three-run shot to left field. The scoring in the third had begun with a solo home run by senior shortstop Michael Parker.
The GW scoring continued in the bottom of the fourth as juniors Charlie Kruer (Old Bridge, NJ/Old Bridge) and Whitey Wallace (Syracuse, NY/Phillip Exeter Academy) each recorded RBI singles.

The Colonials exploded for another six runs in the seventh inning. Whitey Wallace led off with a home run to left field, his first of the season and the second of his career. After a groundout and a strikeout, GW loaded the bases with a hit batter and three straight walks, setting the table for Parker. The senior delivered, crushing his own grand slam-home run (6) to deep left field, extending the Colonial lead to 16-9.
After recording just five home runs and 19 RBI in 59 games last year, Parker already has six homers and 19 RBI through 16 games this season. Parker and Swanson both finished their days with two home runs, five RBI and three runs scored. Wallace added four hits and two RBI of his own. Eight of the nine GW position starters recorded at least one hit and five had at least two hits.
George Washington improved their all-time record against Georgetown to 86-27-1. The two teams were scheduled to meet earlier this season but the game was postponed due to snow. No make up date has been announced.
GW baseball will face-off against Marist College (1-11) this weekend in a non-conference, three-game series. The Colonials are 2-1 versus the Red Foxes, their last meeting coming in 2004. Friday's opener is at 3:00 p.m. Saturday's game is set for 1:00 p.m. and the series finale will be at 12:00 p.m. on Sunday.
