DOVER, DE - George Washington University (6-13) posted a season high number in runs and hits to rout Delaware State University (8-17-1) 14-5 Wednesday afternoon at Solider Field.

Colonials' freshman right fielder Matt Boyd (Rockville, MD / Magruder) exploded for a double, homer (1), three runs, four stolen bases and five RBI in the win.

GW starter freshman RHP Tim Sexton (1-3) allowed two earned runs in five innings to pick up his first collegiate win.

RHP Derek Haese (Littleton, CO / UCSD / Dakota Ridge) threw 3.0 perfect innings and recorded four strike outs in relief for GW to increase his consecutive scoreless innings streak to 6.1 over four appearances.

Catcher Whitey Wallace (Syracuse, NY / Phillips Exeter Academy) doubled and drove in three and centerfielder Matt Owens (Fayetteville, GA / Fayette County) knocked a solo home run for his team-leading third of the year.

The Hornets took a 2-0 first inning lead on an RBI double from third baseman Brandon Gravely and a run scoring single off the bat of second baseman Justin Bittner.

GW posted four in the third inning and opened a 9-4 advantage after six innings.

DSU starter RHP Josh Schmidt (1-3) allowed eight runs, four earned, and struck out seven in 4.2 innings in the loss.

The game saw GW set or tie season-highs in eight offensive categories including at-bats (42), runs (14), hits (16), home runs (2), RBI (13), doubles (5), total bases (27) and stolen bases (8).

The Colonials begin Atlantic 10 Conference play Friday when it opens a three-game series in Charlotte against the 49ers (15-7).

 

 

GW will send RHP Josh Wilkie (3-2, 2.83 ERA) to the mound.
