GW Baseball Pounds Hartford, 17-0
12-Run Second Inning Carriers Colonials to Victory
March 24, 2005
ARLINGTON, VA - A 12-run second inning and starter LHP Dan Sullivan's (Stony Point, NY / North Rockland) (2-3) 11 strikeouts led George Washington University (12-8) over the University of Hartford (0-3) 17-0 Thursday afternoon at Barcroft Park.
After jumping out to a 1-0 first inning advantage, the Colonials used nine hits, a walk and an error to push across 12 runs and take a 13-0 second inning lead.
Leftfielder Charlie Kruer's (Old Bridge, NJ / Old Bridge) grand slam (2), centerfielder Matt Owens's (Fayetteville, GA / Fayette County) two-run home run (1) and catcher Joe Michalski's (Ellicott City, MD / Mt. Hebron) solo shot (5) all contributed to the big inning.
Michalski drove in three runs overall in the game. His home run was his fifth in seven games.
GW second baseman Tom Shanley (Stanfordville, NY / Pine Plains) went 2-for-4, with a double, two RBIs and two runs scored. His hitting streak now stands at 16 games.
First baseman Ryan Roberson (Silver Spring, MD / James H. Blake) collected two hits in three at-bats and now has an 11-game hitting streak.
Shortstop Michael Parker (Newton, MA / Newton South) went 3-for-4 with three runs scored.
GW's 17 runs, 16 hits and 28 total bases were all season highs.
Sullivan allowed just three hits in his six innings of work as he earned the win.
The Colonials open Atlantic 10 conference play this weekend as they host Rhode Island for a doubleheader Saturday and a single game Sunday. Saturday's first pitch is set for 12:00 pm.
