Box Score

CHARLOTTE, NC - Charlotte (16-7, 1-0 A-10) first baseman Adam Floyd's 11th inning RBI single broke a scoreless game and sent George Washington University (6-14, 0-1 A-10) to a 1-0 defeat in both team's conference opener Friday night at Tom and Lib Phillips Field.

With one out in the 11th, 49er's right fielder Spencer Steedley reached first base by getting hit by a pitch, moved to second on a balk and to third on a wild pitch. After reliever RHP Derek Haese (1-1) struck out the next batter for the second out, Floyd singled in the right field gap in his only at-bat to win the game. He had entered in the 10th inning as a defensive replacement.

Colonials' starter RHP Josh Wilkie (Alpharetta, GA / Chattahoochee) was brilliant in 8.0 innings of work, allowing no runs, three hits, two walks and recording seven strikeouts.

After surrendering two hits in the first inning, Wilkie retired the next 13 consecutive batters before yielding a lead off walk in the sixth.

49ers' starter RHP Adam Mills was equally impressive, allowing no runs and striking out nine in 8.2 innings.

Mills had a stretch of 10 straight retired batters and 13 out of 14 before left fielder Charlie Kruer (Old Bridge, NJ / Old Bridge) led off the top of the seventh inning with the Colonials' third infield hit. Mills shut down GW in order five times in the game.

The Colonials only scoring threat came in the ninth inning when shortstop Michael Parker (Newton, MA / Newton South) doubled and was subsequently cut down at the plate when second baseman Mickey Shupin (Sea Girt, NJ / Wall) followed with a single that Charlotte centerfielder Chris Lane fielded and executed a terrific throw to nail Parker at home.

Prior to the 11th, the 49ers squandered two great opportunities to get on the board.

A lead off walk was followed by a throwing error on a sacrifice bunt, putting runners on second and third with nobody out for Charlotte in the sixth. But first baseman Tim Reeves (Cumming, GA / North Forsyth) made two strong defensive plays and then Wilkie finished off the 49ers with a punch out to escape the frame unscathed.

Then in the eighth, the 49ers threatened again when back-to-back GW errors to begin the inning resulted in runners on first and second with nobody out. But a strikeout and two fly outs kept the game scoreless.

Charlotte reliever LHP Kyle Pfirrman (2-0) faced one batter and recorded the strike out to earn the win.

RHP Erik Walker replaced Mills with two outs in the ninth and held GW to one hit in 2.0 innings.

Haese threw an effective ninth and 10th inning before allowing the 49ers to scratch out the winning run.

The game was the Colonials second extra inning affair of the season as they also dropped an 11 inning game in Chapel Hill, NC, earlier in the season, falling to the Tar Heels.

The game was the 49ers' first-ever Atlantic 10 contest as they moved from Conference USA prior to the season.

Game two of the three game conference series is scheduled for Saturday at 2:00 pm.

RHP Derrik Lutz (0-1, 2.01 ERA) gets the call for GW.
