Charlotte Hammers GW Baseball 10-0, Sweeps Colonials in A-10 Series
March 26, 2006
CHARLOTTE, NC - George Washington University (6-16, 0-3 A-10) dug themselves into a 7-0 hole after five innings and never recovered, dropping its third straight game to Charlotte (18-7, 3-0 A-10), 10-0, to suffer its first Atlantic 10 Conference series sweep since 2003 Sunday afternoon at Tom and Lib Phillips Field. The 49ers scored early and often, posting two runs in both the second and third inning, three in the fourth and three in the sixth inning that came courtesy of a tremendous three-run home run from right fielder Spencer Steedley (3) that made it 10-0. Charlotte starter RHP Derek McDaid (5-1) went the distance, scattering six hits in his first career complete game shutout. LHP Dan Pfau (1-4) started for GW and took the loss, giving up nine earned runs on 10 hits in 6.0 innings. Overall, Steedley collected four RBI in the game and shortstop Mike Ambrose went 4-for-5 with a double and one RBI. Ambrose hit .615 (8-for-13) in the series. The Colonials' defensive woes continued during the series as they committed eight errors in the three games and allowed eight unearned runs. For the season, GW has committed 53 errors in 22 games which have lead to 45 unearned runs - representing almost 30% of the team's total runs allowed. GW hosts Towson on Tuesday at 2:30 PM and then opens a three-game conference series against Rhode Island at Barcroft Park beginning Friday. The series will be the first meeting between the two teams since the Rams defeated GW in last year's A-10 Championship game.
