Rhode Island Shuts Out GW Baseball, 7-0

March 31, 2006

Box Score

ARLINGTON, VA - The University of Rhode Island (13-5, 3-1 A-10) held a 2-0 lead through six innings and then broke the game open with five more runs in the eighth inning to defeat George Washington University (6-18, 0-4 A-10) 7-0 Friday afternoon in the first of a three game Atlantic 10 Conference series at Barcroft Park.

Rams' starter RHP Steve Holmes (4-1) held the Colonials to four singles, no walks and recorded 10 strikeouts in 8.0 innings to earn the win.

Colonials' starter RHP Derrik Lutz (0-2) was almost as effective, allowing one earned run and striking out eight in 7.0 innings as he took the loss.

URI took a 1-0 first inning lead courtesy of a two-out RBI single from first baseman Ryan Cunningham. The Rams made to 2-0 in the sixth when second baseman Wayne Russo led off with a single, moved all the way to third on a throwing error and scored on a base hit from right fielder Scott Brown.

After Lutz was removed, three GW relief pitchers were used in the eighth inning when URI scored five times on three hits and three walks to open its 7-0 advantage.

Cunningham and shortstop Mike O'Malley each drove in two runs for the Rams and left fielder Daryl Holcomb collected the game's only extra base hit with a ninth inning double.

Game two of the series is set for Saturday at 1:00 pm.

The Colonials will send RHP Josh Wilkie (3-2, 2.30 ERA) to the mound.
