ARLINGTON, VA- Senior Brendon Kelliher was 3-for-5 with a homerun and five RBIs to lead the George Washington baseball team to their second consecutive Atlantic 10 Conference victory, 6-5 over Saint Joseph's on Friday afternoon at Barcroft Park.

GW (8-18, 2-2 A-10) gave starter Brian Derner a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning after loading the bases with one out. Juniors Jimmy Best and Ollie Mittag each singled and freshman Jordan Berry followed with a walk to put three runners on for Kelliher, who capitalized with a two-run single through the left side.

Saint Joseph's (9-16, 2-2 A-10) answered with three runs in the top of the third inning, after a RBI single from Kevin Taylor and a two-run homerun by Greg Kumpel to take a 3-2 lead.

The Colonials responded to tie the game in the bottom of the fourth after Kelliher reached on an error by Hawks shortstop Anthony Cirillo, allowing junior Brett Bowers to score from third base. Bowers had led off the frame with a double to left center.

The Hawks then took the lead by scoring a run in the top of the sixth inning. But Kelliher put the Colonials ahead for good by launching his third homerun of the season, a two-run blast to left center field in the bottom of the sixth inning to put GW ahead 5-4.

Kelliher would add what turned out to be a very important insurance run in the bottom of the eighth with a RBI single to knock in Berry.

Derner went six and one-third innings and allowed four earned runs while striking out four to earn the victory. Senior Joe Richardson pitched the final two and two-thirds innings, allowing one run in the top of the ninth, to clinch the victory and his second save of the year. Richardson recorded four strikeouts and escaped a bases-loaded jam in the top of the seventh inning.

The Colonials and Hawks will meet again on Saturday afternoon at Barcroft Park in the middle game of this three-game series. LHP Bobby Lucas will take the ball for GW against Saint Joseph's RHP Chad Simendinger. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 pm.
