ARLINGTON, VA- Redshirt senior Bobby Lucas recorded a career-high 11 strikeouts and freshman Jordan Berry connected on his first career homerun, but it was not enough to lead the George Washington baseball team past Saint Joseph's on Saturday afternoon as the Colonials fell, 9-5.

GW (8-19, 2-3 A-10) was held hitless through the first four innings, yet took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Sophomore Justin Albright walked, stole second and advanced to third on an error and later scored on a sacrifice fly by sophomore Tyler McCarthy to take a 1-0 lead.

Lucas was dominant in the early going, striking out the side in the first inning and recording seven of the first eight outs by virtue of punch outs. He went five and two-thirds innings allowing four earned runs while striking out a career-high 11.

Saint Joseph's (10-16, 3-2 A-10) added an unearned run in the fourth and fifth innings to take a 2-1 lead into the sixth.

Freshman Jordan Berry put the Colonials back on top in the bottom of the sixth inning with his first career home run. Junior Ollie Mittag singled up the middle with one out and Berry followed by blasting the first pitch he saw over the left center field fence to put GW ahead 3-2.

In the top of the sixth the Hawks loaded the bases with two outs. Consecutive walks by Lucas and Chris Keiper pushed two runs across to give Saint Joseph's a 4-3 lead.

A sudden hail storm halted play for about 10 minutes and when play resumed, St. Joseph's Kevin Taylor launched a grand slam to left centerfield to put the Hawks ahead 8-3. Chris Hueth added a RBI groundout in the eighth to push the lead to 9-3.

In the bottom half of the eighth inning junior Stephen Oswald delivered a RBI single and junior Ryan Thomas was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to cut the lead to 9-5. The bases were still loaded with no outs when Hawks reliever Chad Kemp entered the game. He proceeded to strike out the side and added two more punch outs in the ninth for the save.

The Colonials and Hawks will meet in the rubber match of this three-game series on Sunday afternoon at Barcroft Park. RHP Tommy Gately will take the mound GW against RHP A.J. Holland. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00pm.
