April 6, 2002
ARLINGTON, VA - GW swept an A-10 doubleheader Saturday from the Fordham University Rams, 9-3 and 8-3, at Barcroft Park. The Colonials hit two homers in each game, including two by senior Mike Bassett (Paramus, NJ/ Paramus) to tie the GW career home run record with 50. GW improves to 18-12 overall and 6-2 in the A-10, while the Rams are now 6-20-1 for the season and 1-7 in the conference.
In the first game, the Rams scored one run in the first inning on a sacrifice fly by Jon Volosin. The Colonials responded with four runs, the first scored on a bases-loaded walk, followed by junior tri-captain Chris Barry's (Orchard Park, NY/Canisius) two-RBI double to left field. The Rams scored one run in the second inning when Robert Kingsbury drove in Timothy Short on a sacrifice fly. GW maintained a 4-2 advantage until the bottom of the third, when they scored three more on two homers. Bassett led off with a solo homer to center field. Freshman Anthony Raglani (Indiana, PA/Indiana) followed two batters later with a blast over the center field wall to score Barry, who had reached on a single to center. With GW leading 7-2, the Colonials added two more in the fourth, the first on an RBI double to right field by senior tri-captain Matt Krimmel (Schnecksville, PA/Parkland), followed by an RBI single to left by Bassett. Fordham cut the lead by one in the top of the seventh when Kevin Brush smacked a solo home run over the left field wall. Junior righthander Greg Conden (Owego, NY/Owego Free Academy) earned his sixth win of the season after he pitched a complete seven-inning game and allowed three runs on five hits.
On Bassett's first at-bat in the second game, he hit his seventh home run of the season, 50th of his career, to score Krimmel. Fordham took the lead in the top of the second with three unearned runs on a home run to left field by Jeremy Bourgeois. The Colonials managed to tie the game at three in the bottom of the second with an RBI single to left field by Jake Wald (Alexandria, VA/T.C. Williams) to bring home Raglani. GW added another run in the third when Barry hit a solo homer to left field to take a 4-3 lead. The Colonials added four runs in the bottom of the sixth. Raglani hit an RBI double to right center to score sophomore Jeff Fertitta (Baltimore, MD/Loyola Blakefield), who had doubled to left field. Freshman Joe Michalski (Ellicott City, MD/Mt. Hebron) then singled to right to drive home Raglani. Michalski made it home when Wald reached first on a throwing error and Wald scored on a single through the right side by senior Travis Crowder (Manassas, VA/Osbourn). Senior righthander Jason Baker (Accokeek, MD/DeMatha) pitched a complete seven-inning game for the win, allowing three unearned runs on three hits.
