Baseball Wins Final Series Game Against Fordham, 4-3
April 7, 2002
ARLINGTON, VA - The Colonials completed a three-game sweep of the Fordham Rams with a 4-3 victory Sunday at Barcroft Park. GW won both ends of a doubleheader with the Rams on Saturday. GW improves to 19-12 overall and 7-2 in the A-10, while the Rams are now 6-21-1 for the season and 1-8 in the conference.
The Colonials scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the first when senior Mike Bassett (Paramus, NJ/ Paramus) hit an RBI single to right field to drive in senior Travis Crowder (Manassas, VA/Osbourn), who had singled to center field. The Rams responded in the third with a solo homer over the right center wall by Robert Kingsbury. Fordham then added another run on an RBI single to left field by Jeremy Bourgeois. With the Rams leading 2-1, GW added two more in the bottom of the fifth to regain the lead. Junior tri-captain Chris Barry's (Orchard Park, NY/Canisius) stroked an RBI single to center field to bring home senior Tony Brown (Hockessin, DE/A.I.DuPont), who had singled to right. Sophomore Jeff Fertitta (Baltimore, MD/Loyola Blakefield) then hit a sacrifice fly to drive in senior tri-captain Matt Krimmel (Schnecksville, PA/Parkland), who had reached on a single down the left field line. Fordham managed to tie the game at three in the top of the sixth on an RBI single to left field by Jason Conlisk to score Kurt Thomas. The tie did not last for long though, as the Colonials pulled ahead with a run in the bottom of the sixth on a bases-loaded walk for the final margin.
Freshman righthander Justin Orenduff (Chesapeake, VA/Western Branch) earned his sixth win of the season after he pitched two innings, with only two hits and five strikeouts. Senior lefthander Mike O'Connor (Ellicott City, MD/Mt. St. Joe's) pitched the final inning-and-a-third for his fifth save of the season.
GW will travel to Delaware State Tuesday, April 9 for a 3:00 p.m. game. The Colonials will then host Norfolk State at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 10 at Barcroft Park.
The Buff and Blue contingent had barely settled into the Tucker Field bleachers before Fordham loaded the bases Thursday against Nathan Woods.
