Derrik Lutz's 2-Hit Complete Game Carries GW To 5-2 Win Over Xavier
April 7, 2006
ARLINGTON, VA - RHP Derrik Lutz (1-2) did not allow an earned run in a masterful two-hit, nine strikeout, complete game performance in George Washington University's (9-20, 2-5 A-10) 5-2 victory over Xavier University (10-20, 2-5 A-10) Friday afternoon in an Atlantic 10 Conference match up at Barcroft Park. Lutz carried a no-hitter through 5.2 innings before a two-out double by XU first baseman Sean Brewer dropped in down the left field line to knock home two unearned runs. The Colonials took a 2-0 lead in the second inning on an RBI sacrifice fly from shortstop Michael Parker (Newton, MA / Newton South) and an RBI single from designated hitter Whitey Wallace (Syracuse, NY / Phillip Exeter Academy). After the Musketeers tied the game in the top of the sixth inning, GW regained the lead with two runs in the bottom half of the frame. Third baseman Tom Shanley's (Stanfordville, NY / Pine Plains) single was misplayed in the outfield and allowed right fielder Mickey Shupin (Sea Girt, NJ / Wall) to score from first base, proving to be the winning run. GW made it 4-2 when Shanley moved from second base to third on an infield error and scored on a RBI ground out from left fielder Charlie Kruer (Old Bridge, NJ / Old Bridge). Shanley scored again in the eighth inning after doubling and coming around by stealing third base and scoring on an error on the same play to make it 5-2. Musketeers' starter RHP Mike Creevy (2-6) allowed one earned run in 7.0 innings but took the loss as four XU errors led to three unearned runs. Brewer also had the Musketeers' other hit, leading off the ninth inning with an opposite field single to right.
Both Shanley and GW catcher Andrew Abokhair (Ashburn, VA / Broad Run) went 2-for-4 in the game. The second of the three-game conference series is set for Saturday at 1:00 pm. RHP Josh Wilkie (3-2, 2.52 ERA) gets the nod for GW. - GW - |
