April 9, 2006
ARLINGTON, VA - George Washington University's (11-20, 4-5 A-10) late rally and walk-off home run from centerfielder Matt Owens (Fayetteville, GA / Fayette County) (4) led the Colonials to a 4-3 victory in game one of its doubleheader against Xavier University (10-22, 2-7 A-10) and starter LHP Dan Pfau's (2-4) complete game performance and third baseman Tom Shanley's (Stanfordville, NY / Pine Plains) game breaking three-run home run (2) lifted GW to a 6-3 win in the second game Sunday afternoon at Barcroft Park. The two victories gave the Colonials both the doubleheader and three-game Atlantic 10 series sweep as GW has now won four straight conference games to jump back into the A-10 Championship race.
The Colonials trailed 3-0 in the eighth inning of game one when three Musketeers' errors handed GW three unearned runs that tied the game 3-3. The Colonials did not record a hit in the inning.
With one out in the bottom of the ninth inning, Owens turned on the first pitch he saw and launched a tremendous home run over the right field fence to give GW the game, 4-3.
RHP Josh Wilkie (Alpharetta, GA / Chattahoochee) started for the Colonials and allowed three runs in 8.0 innings in the no decision. Reliever RHP Derek Haese (3-2) came on in the ninth inning to retire XU and earn the win.

Designated hitter Chris Lozan's fourth inning solo home run (2) put XU on top 1-0 and first baseman Sean Brewer's two-run double in the fifth staked the Musketeers to their 3-0 advantage.
Game two, scheduled for seven innings, saw both teams match each other inning for inning as the stood tied 3-3 in the fifth when Shanley's three-run blast sent GW to its 6-3 win.
XU scored a run in the third inning on left fielder Richard Bautista's (1) home run and two more in the fourth on Lozan's second homer of the day and an RBI sacrifice fly from shortstop Matt Waskerwitz.
GW scored a run in the third inning on an RBI single from Shanley and two more in the fourth on an RBI base hit from right fielder Matt Boyd (Rockville, MD / Magruder) that set the count at 3-3.
Shanley went 2-for-3 with all four GW RBI in the contest.
Pfau went the full seven innings, giving up three runs on eight hits to earn the win.
XU starter RHP Dan Graham (2-3) was touched for all six Colonial runs as he took the loss.
The second game of the series was originally scheduled for Saturday but was postponed due to rain and turned into Sunday's doubleheader.
Sunday's two wins, coupled with Friday's 5-2 victory, marks the second time in three years GW swept XU as the Colonials took all three contests when the team's met in 2004. GW has now won eight of its last nine games against XU.
The Colonials host William and Mary in their next game scheduled for Tuesday at 3:00 pm.
GW then travels to Olean, NY, for a three-game A-10 series at St. Bonaventure beginning Thursday.
