George Mason Slugs Its Way to a 12-5 Win over GW Baseball

April 10, 2007

Box Score

FAIRFAX, VA - George Mason (15-17) scored at least one run in six separate innings as they downed George Washington (11-21) by a final of 12-5, Tuesday afternoon at Spuhler Field.

The Patriots scored first, taking an early 2-0 lead in their first at-bats on left fielder Scott Krieger's opposite field, two-run home run, his fourteenth of the season.

George Mason added to their lead in the bottom of the second as Spencer Wiggins reached on a GW error, advanced to second on a single and then came around to score on an RBI-single by Chris Henderson, making it 3-0 in favor of the home team.

In the third, George Mason continued their scoring, plating three more runs on four hits to extend their lead to 6-0.

GW broke onto the scoreboard in their half of the fourth. Doug Eizen (Philadelphia, PA/The Haverford School) reached on a walk to lead off the inning, moved over to third on Michael Parker's (Newton, MA/Newton South) single and then scored the first Colonial run of the day on Charlie Kruer's (Old Bridge, NJ/Old Bridge) ground out to second base.

The Patriots plated two more runs in the fourth and another one in the fifth, making it 9-1 after five innings.

With Mason leading 12-1 in the top of the eighth Charlie Kruer came to the plate with the bases loaded and cleared them all with a grand slam over the wall in right field. The home run, his ninth of the season, tied his season high from last year and was his second grand slam of his career. The junior outfielder finished the day with five RBI.

Mason's starter, Ryan Brecko (2-2), pitched the first 7 1/3 innings and allowed four runs while striking our four batters. Ryan Lapointe (Somerswoth, NH/Phillips Exeter Academy) took the loss for the Colonials and fell to 2-2 on the year.

George Washington will host James Madison tomorrow, April 11, at 3:00 p.m.

Game Notes: Mickey Shupin (Sea Girt, NJ/Wall) and Michael Parker were both 3-for-4 on the day ... Derek Haese struck out five batters in just three innings of relief work.
