Berry's RBI Single Leads GW Baseball To Doubleheader Split With Canisius

ARLINGTON, VA- Freshman Jordan Berry delivered a walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the 13th inning and freshman Aaron Weisberg pitched six shutout innings of relief to lead the George Washington baseball team to a 3-2 win over Canisius on Sunday afternoon at Barcroft Park. Canisius won the first game of the doubleheader 8-1. After dropping the first game of the twin bill, GW (10-23) got off to a quick start in the nightcap by taking a 2-0 lead in the second inning. Senior Brendon Kelliher led off with a double to left field and freshman Brookes Townsend followed with a RBI single through the left side to give the Colonials a 1-0 advantage. Later in the inning, Berry knocked in his first run of the game with a double to left center field to extend the lead to 2-0. Sophomore Brian Derner got the start for the Colonials in game two and pitched seven solid innings, allowing two earned runs on five hits with one strikeout. He allowed a RBI single and a bases loaded walk in the top of the fourth inning that allowed the Griffins to tie the game 2-2. Weisberg entered in relief in the eighth and allowed just four hits over a marvelous six innings of relief to earn his first career victory. He registered four strikeouts and one walk and danced out of trouble in the ninth, stranding the go-ahead run on third base. The Colonials loaded the bases in the bottom of the 10th inning but were unable to push across the winning run. Townsend reached on a fielder's choice but sophomore Tyler McCarthy was forced out at home and junior Jimmy Best struck out to end the threat. In the 11th, McCarthy was again thrown out at home plate after a failed double steal attempt.
Best started the winning rally in the bottom of the 13th with a single to left center. Junior Ollie Mittag followed with a double down the left field line to put the winning run 90 feet away for Berry, who lined a 1-1 pitch through the left side of the infield to give the Colonials a 3-2 walk off win. Berry finished game two 2-for-5 with a double and two RBIs. In game one, Canisius jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning after Sean Jamieson hit a two-run home run of off Colonial starter Tommy Gately. Gately settled down after the first inning and allowed just one hit over the next four innings. The Griffs added three runs in the sixth inning with a RBI double by Brian Burton and a clutch two-out, two-run single by Chris Gruarin to push the lead to 5-1. They added three more runs in the sixth after Jamieson's second home run of the day. Gately took the loss after allowing five earned runs in six innings of work. He struck out six batters on the afternoon. The Colonials will return to action on Wednesday afternoon when they host Towson at Barcroft Park. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 pm. GW will return to Atlantic 10 Conference play on Friday when they open a three-game series at Fordham. |
