Baseball Edged by Fordham in A-10 Series Opener, 3-0
April 11, 2008
BRONX, NY - Fordham pitching shutout George Washington baseball and held them to just four hits as the Rams snuck past the Colonials, 3-0, in the opening game of a three-game Atlantic 10 Conference series at Houlihan Park in Bronx, NY. Fordham starter Tom Davis (4-2) stifled the GW bats all day long, allowing just four hits and three walks in eight innings pitched. He struck out nine in the game. Chris Kable, who started the game as the designated hitter, pitched a perfect ninth in relief for his sixth save of the season. GW starter Chris Neary (Phoenix, AZ/Sunnyslope/Scottsdale CC) worked seven innings and surrendered just the three runs on six hits, only a week after flirting with a no-hitter against Massachusetts. Sophomore Faizan Choudhry (Langley, BC/Langley Secondary) pitched the 8th inning. Fordham scored first in Friday's opener, pushing across two runs in the bottom of the third inning. After a single, walk and hit batter loaded the bases, Eric Reese singled into centerfield to drive in two and gave the Rams a 2-0 lead. The score remained the same until the seventh inning. In the bottom of the frame, with a runner on second and two outs, Fordham's Rich Goulian singled up the middle. Centerfielder Matt Boyd (Rockville, MD/Magruder) came up throwing to try and nail the runner at the plate, but Bobby DiNardo's slide jarred the ball loose from catcher Andrew Abokhair (Ashburn, VA/Broad Run), extending the Fordham lead, 3-0. The GW offense was passed by senior OF Charlie Kruer (Old Bridge, NJ/Old Bridge) who went 2-for-4 with a double. Kruer is now in sole possession of 12th place at GW with 45 career doubles. George Washington (16-16, 5-5 A-10) and Fordham (17-14, 4-6 A-10) continue their series on Saturday, at 1:00 p.m.
