April 12, 2013
CHARLOTTE - The George Washington baseball team rallied to tie the game in the seventh inning, but home-standing Charlotte earned a 4-3 victory with a walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth on Friday night in the series opener at Hayes Stadium.
GW (11-22, 5-5 A-10) starter Luke Staub yielded a run in the bottom of the first on an RBI double from Justin Seager but settled down to hold the 49ers scoreless over the next three innings.
GW had two runners on base and two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning when senior Tyler McCarthy lined a 1-0 pitch up the middle to drive in two, putting the Colonials up, 2-1.
Charlotte (20-13, 4-3 A-10) regained the lead in the sixth on a two-out, two-run triple by Tony Montalbano, which put Charlotte ahead, 3-2.
McCarthy came through again in the top of the seventh, tying the game at 3-3 with another RBI single.
Charlotte's Wes Hatley pitched a perfect top half of the ninth for Charlotte. In the bottom half, the 49ers had a runner on second with two outs after a single and a wild pitch. Montalbano came to the plate and floated a single to left center to drive in the game-winning run.
The Colonials and 49ers play game two of the series on Saturday afternoon. First pitch at Hayes Stadium is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
