Career-High 12 K's From Derrik Lutz Leads Baseball To 10-2 Win At St. Bonnies

April 13, 2006

Box Score

ST. BONAVENTURE, NY - RHP Derrik Lutz (2-2) fanned a career-high 12 hitters and allowed no earned runs and three hits in 8.0 innings to pace George Washington University (12-21, 5-5 A-10) to a 10-2 victory over St. Bonaventure University (10-11, 5-5 A-10) Friday afternoon in the first of a three-game conference series at McGraw-Jennings Field.

The Colonials trailed 1-0 through four innings before they took over the game with a three-run fifth inning and a six-run sixth to jump out to a 9-1 lead.

Left fielder Charlie Kruer (Old Bridge, NJ / Old Bridge) put GW on the board in the top of the fifth with a lead off home run (6) to left centerfield.

An RBI bunt single from designated hitter Whitey Wallace (Syracuse, NY / Phillip Exeter Academy) followed by an RBI single from first baseman Doug Eizen (Philadelphia, PA/ The Haverford School) staked the Colonials to a 3-1 advantage.

GW then broke the contest wide open an inning later when it plated six runs to grab a 9-1 lead.

After lead off singles from third baseman Tom Shanley (Stanford, NY / Pine Plains) and catcher Andrew Abokhair (Ashburn, VA / Broad Run), Kruer doubled to drive in a run and an intentional walk to load the bases preceded a hit batsman that produced another run and made the score 5-1.

Bonnies' starter LHP Eddie Williams (2-3) was then lifted before an RBI fielder's choice and another Eizen RBI base hit set the count at 7-1.

Second baseman Bryan Hwang (Northvale, NJ / Northvale) completed the sixth inning carnage with a two-run single to make it 9-1.

Williams was charged with seven earned runs in 5.0 innings and took the loss.

SBU's one unearned run off Lutz came in the first inning courtesy a wild pitch.

First baseman Brian Pellegrini and third baseman Matt Mardeusz each recorded one of the Bonnies' five total hits, each connecting for a double.

Kruer led GW with a 3-for-5 performance, launching a homer, double, scoring two runs and driving in two.

Over his last three starts Lutz has now allowed just one earned run in 24.0 innings (0.38 ERA), tallying 29 strikeouts (1.2 per inning) during the stretch.

Game two of the series is scheduled for Friday at 12:00 pm.

GW will send RHP Josh Wilkie (3-2, 2.68 ERA) to the mound.
