Colonials A-10 Win Streak Comes To An End; Drops Doubleheader At SBU

April 15, 2006

Box Score

ST. BONAVENTURE, NY - The George Washington University baseball team's (12-23, 5-7 A-10) five game conference winning streak came to an end Saturday afternoon as the Colonials dropped both games of their doubleheader against St. Bonaventure University (12-11, 7-5 A-10), losing game one 5-4 and game two 5-3 at McGraw-Jennings Field.

In game one, the Bonnies took a 5-1 lead after four innings and withstood GW's two-run rally in the fifth inning and one run in the seventh to hold off the Colonials 5-4.

RBI singles from shortstop Michael Parker (Newton, MA / Newton South) and third baseman Tom Shanley (Stanfordville, NY / Pine Plains) brought GW to within one run, 5-3, in the fifth inning and Parker's solo home run (2) in the seventh made it as close as 5-4 in the Colonials' loss.

RHP Josh Wilkie (3-3) started for GW and struck out a career-high 11 batters in 7.0 innings, surrendering 10 hits and four earned runs as he took the loss.

Bonnies' starter LHP Cody Vincent (2-2) recorded the win, giving up three earned runs and tallying seven strike outs in 7.2 innings.

SBU jumped out to a 2-0 in the second inning following a pair of RBI singles from catcher B.J. Salerno and shortstop Josh Perkins. After the Colonials answered with a run in the top of the fourth to make it 2-1, centerfielder Randy Moley singled in second baseman Kieran Malone to give Bona a 3-1 lead.

First baseman Brian Pellegrini stroked a two-run homer to left centerfield to extend the SBU's lead to 5-1.

Game two saw GW take a 1-0 advantage in the top of the third inning on a Shanley RBI double. But the Bonnies came roaring back in the bottom half of the frame with a Pellegrini's second home run of the day, a grand slam that put the stake the Bonnies to a 4-1 lead that they would not relinquish.

First baseman Doug Eizen (Philadelphia, PA / The Haverford School) brought the Colonials to within 4-3 in the fourth inning with a two-run single, but SBU added a run in the bottom half to take the seven-inning game, 5-3.

GW starter LHP Dan Pfau (2-5) went 4.2 innings and allowed just one earned run in the loss.

LHP John Zinnicker started for SBU and went 3.2 innings before reliever Matt Agostinelli (1-0) came on to throw 3.1 hitless innings to secure the win. Agostinelli also recorded the save in game one.

In the two games, Pellegrini went 3-for-7 with a double, two home runs and six RBI.

Saturday's contest became a doubleheader after Friday's scheduled game was rained out.

Overall in the series, GW lost two of three as it took game one 10-2 on Thursday.

The Colonials look to rebound on the road next week, playing at UMBC on Tuesday, Georgetown on Wednesday and a three-game A-10 series at Temple beginning Friday, April 21.
