Dayton Rolls Past GW Baseball in A-10 Series Opener, 12-1
April 18, 2008
ARLINGTON, VA - Dayton starting pitcher Lucas Farden threw a one-run, complete-game and held George Washington to just seven hits as the Flyers (20-16, 5-8 A-10) cruised past the Colonials, 12-1, in the opening game of a three-game Atlantic 10 Conference series late Friday afternoon at Barcroft Park in Arlington, VA. Farden recorded seven strikeouts in the win and allowed just five hits and no runs after the second inning.
George Washington starter Chris Neary (Scottsdale, AZ/Sunnyslope/Scottsdale CC) suffered the loss (1-5), as he surrendered eight runs on 10 hits in 5.1 innings of work.
The Colonials (17-19, 6-7 A-10) took an early lead, scoring a run in the bottom of the second when sophomore DH Curtis Eward (Oak Hill, VA/Oakton) ripped a single into center to drive in junior Tim Reeves (Cumming, GA/North Forsyth), who had reached on a single of his own.
The score remained 1-0 in favor of GW until the top of the fifth, when Dayton put two on the board with a Marshall MacDonald two-run home run to left field. The Flyers took a 2-1 lead on that homer and never looked back.
Dayton blew the game open with seven runs in the top of the sixth inning, plus another one in the seventh and two more in the eighth. In that pivotal sixth frame, the Flyers sent 11 batters to the plate and recorded seven hits as 10 of the batters reached base safely.
Jake Hoover led the way for the Flyers, going 4-for-4 with two doubles and two runs scored. Every Dayton starter recorded at least one hit. Marshall MacDonald finished 2-for-5 with three RBI.
Sean Rockey (Sammamish, WA/Eastlake/Columbia Basin CC) recorded two hits for the Colonials, and finished 2-for-4.
GW and Dayton play game two of their A-10 series Saturday, Apr. 19, with first pitch scheduled for 1:00 p.m, at Barcroft Park.
