Baseball and Bassett Pound Explorers
Washington, D.C. (April 22, 2001) - Junior Mike Bassett (Paramus, NJ/ Paramus) went five for eight with three home runs and 10 RBIās on the day to lead GW to a sweep of LaSalle, 15-6 and 6-4, this afternoon at Barcroft Park. The Colonials improved to 26-16 overall and 10-6 in the Atlantic 10 with the victories. The Explorers fell to 9-26 overall and 6-10 in the Atlantic 10.
With the Colonials already ahead 3-0 in game one, Bassett stepped to the plate in the fourth with two runners on and hit his first home run of the day to give GW a 6-0 lead.
LaSalle cut the lead to 7-6 with three runs in the sixth, but GW blew the game open in the bottom of the inning with eight runs of their own. Bassett started it off with an RBI single to score junior Matt Krimmel (Schnecksville, PA/ Parkland) and sophomore Jake Wald, redshirt senior Tony Brown (Hockessin, DE/ A.I. DuPont) and Krimmel all had run scoring singles later in the inning to give GW a 15-6 lead.
Sophomore Greg Conden (Owego, NY/ Owego Free Academy) pitched effective baseball for five and a third innings before turning things over to junior Mike OāConnor (Ellicott City, MD/ Mt. St. Joeās). Conden picked up his sixth win of the season.
In game two Bassett got the Colonials going with a grand slam in the first off of LaSalle starter Dan Kern to give GW the early lead. The Colonials added single runs in the third and fifth and senior Bryan Beggs (Somerset, PA/ Somerset) pitched the final two innings to pick up his seventh save of the season as the Colonials held on, 6-4.
GW starter Chris Worth (North Arlington, NJ/ N. Arlington) picked up his fifth win of the season by pitching five innings while allowing four runs on six hits.
The Colonials return to Barcroft Park on Tuesday, April 24, at 3:00 p.m. as they face the George Mason Patriots. The Patriots defeated GW on March 14, 5-4. In that game the Patriots rallied for two runs in the bottom of the eighth to tie the score at four before winning the game in the bottom of the ninth.
