ARLINGTON, VA - James Madison University (27-18) used a Colonials' fielding error to score two unearned runs to break a 2-2 eighth inning tie and defeat George Washington University (15-24) 4-2 Tuesday afternoon at Barcroft Park.
With the game tied at two in the top of eighth inning, the Dukes loaded the bases with two outs and scored twice when pinch hitter Brett Garner drove in a run on a fielder's choice and designated hitter Lee Bujakowski followed with an RBI single to put JMU on top for good, 4-2.
Trailing 1-0 in the third inning, the Colonials used an RBI single from third baseman Tom Shanley (Stanfordville, NY / Pine Plains) and a bases loaded hit batsman to plate two runners and take a 2-1 lead.
Back-to-back JMU singles in the fifth inning put second baseman Michael Cowgill on third base with one out to set up a sacrifice fly from catcher Matt Sluder, evening the game at 2-2.
The Dukes' 1-2-3 hitters each recorded two hits in the game, as did GW's 3-4-5 batters.
JMU RHP Justin Wood (2-0) came on in relief with one out in the third inning and was extremely effective, allowing no runs and yielding four hits in 5.2 innings as he took the win.
Clayton McKim recorded the game's final three outs to earn the save (2).
LHP Dan Pfau (Flemington, NJ / Hunterdon Central) started for GW and allowed one run on three hits in 3.0 innings.
RHP Pat Lehman (1-3) relieved in the fourth for the Colonials and allowed one earned run in 4.1 innings but was responsible for the Dukes' two unearned runs which saddled him with the loss.
