ARLINGTON, VA - GW split an A-10 doubleheader Saturday with the nationally ranked no. 24 University of Richmond Spiders at Barcroft Park. The Colonials prevailed in the first game to rally to win 4-2 in 10-innings, but dropped the second game 7-5 despite an extra effort in the bottom of the sixth. GW is now 30-14 overall and 14-3 in the A-10, while the Spiders are now 36-7 for the season and 15-2 in the conference.

In the first game, the Spiders scored the first run in the second inning on a ground out by Brian Ruscello to drive in Vito Chiaravalloti, who had doubled to right center. Richmond maintained a one run advantage until GW senior Tony Brown (Hockessin, DE/A.I.DuPont) tied the game in the bottom of the seventh. Brown singled down the right field line to score freshman Anthony Raglani (Indiana, PA/Indiana), who had doubled to left field. The Spiders added a run in the ninth when Bryan Pritz, who had doubled to center field, scored on a sacrifice fly by Adam Tidball. GW did not trail for long as junior tri-captain Chris Barry (Orchard Park, NY/Canisius) started off the ninth with a single blast over the right field wall to tie the game at two. The Colonials returned to bat in the bottom of the tenth to finish off the game with a dramatic two-run homer to center field by senior cleanup hitter Mike Bassett (Paramus, NJ/ Paramus). Senior lefthander Mike O'Connor (Ellicott City, MD/Mt. St. Joe's) earned his third win of the season after he pitched two innings, with no runs and no hits.

The Colonials scored a quick first run in the second game when Bassett drove in junior Jake Wald (Alexandria, VA/T.C. Williams) on a sacrifice fly. The Spiders responded with a run in the top of the second on a homer over the right field wall by Chiaravalloti. In the third inning, Richmond added another run when Matt Craig hit an RBI single up the middle to drive in David Reaver, who had doubled to right. GW then tied the game at two in the bottom of the third when senior tri-captain Matt Krimmel (Schnecksville, PA/Parkland) scored on an RBI single by Barry. The Spiders took the lead in the fourth with four runs delivered on a fielder's choice grounder by Michael Galligan and RBI singles by John Cronin, Pritz and Reaver. GW cut the lead by one in the bottom of the fourth on a single by junior Tony Dokoupil (Severna Park, MD) to score freshman Ryan Roberson (Silver Spring, MD/James H. Blake). With the 6-3 advantage, the Spiders added their final run in the top of the fifth when Pritz singled to right field. GW rallied in the bottom of the sixth from a four run deficit to score two more. Dokoupil hit his second RBI single of the game to drive in Brown. Dokoupil then made it home on a double to left field by Krimmel. Spider starter Thomas Martin earned his third win of the season after pitching four innings and allowing three unearned runs on three hits.

 

 

The Colonials and Spiders will complete their series on Sunday, April 28 in a battle for first place of the Atlantic 10 West Division. The game begins at noon at Barcroft Park.
