Charlotte Sneaks by GW in Eleven Innings

April 28, 2007

Box Score

ARLINGTON, VA - Charlotte (34-8, 15-2 A-10) scored two runs in the top of the eleventh inning to down George Washington (16-26-1, 8-9 A-10) by a final score of 3-1 in eleven innings Saturday afternoon at Barcroft Park.

In the top frame of the eleventh, with a runner standing on second, Cory Lane laced a single up the middle to score the go-ahead run for the 49ers. Charlotte added their second run of the inning on a wild-pitch.

The teams exchanged three scoreless frames before GW scraped together a run in the bottom of the fourth to take the 1-0 lead. Tom Zebroski (Port Washington, NY/Paul Schreiber) led-off with a walk, was forced to second on a walk to Michael Parker (Newton, MA/Newton), advanced to third on a groundout and then came around to score on a fielder's choice hit by Curtis Eward (Oak Hill, VA/Oakton).

The Colonials' slim lead was short lived, however, as the 49ers scratched together a run of their own in the fifth on a Shayne Moody single through the right side that scored Cory Lane.

GW starting pitcher Scott Swinson (Ellicott City, MD/Centennial) avoided further damage in the fifth. After walking Brad McElroy to load the bases, Swinson buckled-down and struck out Chris Taylor to end the threat.

Swinson worked the first eight innings of the game and allowed just one run as he scattered eight hits and struck out five.

The teams will complete their three-game series Sunday at 12:00 p.m.
