GW Baseball Suffers 8-2 Setback Versus Charlotte
Colonials Look to Salvage a Win in A-10 Series on Sunday
April 28, 2012
ARLINGTON, Va. - The George Washington baseball team fell behind 3-1 after the first inning and was unable to mount a rally as the Colonials fell, 8-2, to visiting Charlotte on Saturday afternoon at Barcroft Park.
Charlotte (19-23, 7-9 A-10) opened the game by scoring three runs in the top of the first inning as the 49ers took advantage of a pair of Colonials' errors.
GW (17-27, 3-11 A-10) was able to get one run back in the bottom half of the inning as sophomore Owen Beightol drove in a run on a sacrifice bunt to close within 3-1.
The 49ers used a two-run double from Shane Brown in the second inning and a RBI double from Brad Elwood in the third to expand the lead to 6-1. They went on to add single runs in the seventh and eighth innings to push the lead to 8-1.
The Colonials were able to load the bases with no outs in the bottom of the ninth inning, but managed only a RBI groundout from junior Tyler McCarthy for the 8-2 final.
Charlotte's Joe Yermal earned the win after striking out four, scattering five hits and allowing just one earned run in seven innings.
Sophomore Aaron Weisberg was tagged with the loss after allowing seven runs (six earned) in seven innings of work. Classmate Colin Milon allowed one run in an inning of relief and sophomore Matthew Seedorff pitched a perfect top half of the ninth inning.
The Colonials and 49ers will conclude their series on Sunday afternoon at 12 p.m. at Barcroft Park.
