Baseball's Koken Throws No-Hitter in Game One of Doubleheader Sweep
GW Wins First Game 17-0, Second Game 8-3 Over Mount Saint Mary's
May 2, 2002
ARLINGTON, VA - GW swept a doubleheader Thursday from the Mount Saint Mary's Mountaineers, 17-0 and 8-3, at Barcroft Park. Freshman righthander Nick Koken (Basking Ridge, NJ/Immaculata) pitched a seven-inning no-hitter for the first win of the day, despite a 40-minute lightning delay in the bottom of the sixth. The second game was highlighted by three GW homers to score six of their eight runs. GW improves to 33-15 overall (14-4 A-10), while the Mountaineers are now 15-32 for the season (8-3 Northeast).
With only five appearances in relief for a total of five innings under his belt going into Thursday's game, Koken earned his first collegiate win in impressive fashion by twirling seven innings of no-hit ball. He allowed only one baserunner when he hit Jamion Christian with a pitch in the top of the fourth inning. Christian was subsequently erased on a double play two batters later. Koken struck out six and now has 11 strikeouts on the season.
In the first game, the Colonials scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning, two on junior Tony Dokoupil's (Severna Park, MD) fourth round-tripper of the season. That was more than enough run support for Koken. GW added two more in the second and exploded for eight runs in the third. Three of the runs scored in the third inning were on a blast over the left field wall by sophomore Jeff Fertitta (Baltimore, MD/Loyola Blakefield), his 11th homer of the season. The Colonials added four more in their final three innings at bat, including one on a solo homer by freshman Ryan Roberson (Silver Spring, MD/James H. Blake), his fifth of the season.
The Colonials scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the first on a solo homer by senior tri-captain Matt Krimmel (Schnecksville, PA/Parkland), his 11th home run of the season. GW added five more runs in the bottom of the third, two on a two-run blast over the right field wall by freshman Joe Michalski (Ellicott City, MD/Mt. Hebron) to score Roberson, who had an RBI single to center field. The Mountaineers rallied in the fourth to load the bases, but would not score as freshman lefthander Avi Rasowsky (Glenmont, NY/Bethleham Central) struck out the next batter and then forced Chris Staub to ground into a double play. Mount Saint Mary's managed to score three runs two innings later. Daniel Fowler, who singled to left center field, Eric Laverick, who singled to right, and John DiGirolamo all scored on GW errors. With the Colonials leading by three, GW added two more in the bottom of the sixth on freshman Anthony Raglani's (Indiana, PA/Indiana) fifth home run of the season. Rasowsky earned his first win of his college career after he pitched five innings and allowed just three hits. Senior Mike O'Connor (Ellicott City, MD/Mt. St. Joe's) notched his ninth save this year after pitching one and a third scoreless innings with no hits. Senior Mike Bassett (Paramus, NJ/Paramus) singled twice to tie the GW career hits record with 267.
The Colonials will travel to Pittsburgh, PA, this weekend for a three-game A-10 series against Duquesne University. On Saturday, the teams will play a doubleheader starting a noon and will complete the series on Sunday with a single-game.
