Kruer Hits Two Home Runs, Lehman Pitches Complete Game as Colonials Cruise Past Temple, 13-2
May 2, 2008
ARLINGTON, VA - On the same day that he was honored as the team's 2008 Most Valuable Player, senior OF Charlie Kruer (Old Bridge, NJ/Old Bridge) hit two home runs and drove in six runs to help lead George Washington baseball to a 13-2 win over Temple on Friday afternoon in the opening game of their Atlantic 10 Conference series at Barcroft Park in Arlington, VA. Junior RHP Pat Lehman (Fair Lawn, NJ/Fair Lawn) got the start and earned the win with a complete-game, two-run performance while striking out six. Kruer now has 11 home runs this season, tops on the team, and three in his past three games. He ranks fifth all-time at GW with 37 career homers and fourth all-time with 174 career RBI. Pat Lehman recorded his third complete game of the season, as he improved his record to 6-3. He scattered seven hits and allowed just two runs in 9.0 IP. Friday's game was scoreless for the first 3.5 innings before GW put two runs on the board in the bottom of the fourth frame with Kruer's first round-tripper of the afternoon, a shot deep to right field. After Temple tied the game in the top of the fifth, the Colonials responded with four runs in the bottom of the frame to take control. With the bases loaded and two outs, senior C Andrew Abokhair (Ashburn, VA/Broad Run) delivered with an opposite-field triple that cleared the bases. Kruer followed and drove-in fellow senior Abokhair with an infield single to give GW a 6-2 lead. In the bottom of the seventh, the Colonials put the game out of reach when they sent 13 batters to the plate and recorded eight hits on their way to scoring seven runs in the frame. Ten of the first 11 batters reached base safely, including nine-in-a-row. Sophomore Tom Zebroski (Port Washington, NY/Paul Schreiber) recorded two hits in the inning.
After a walk and a single put two runners on, Kruer came up and deposited a pitch deep into the trees beyond the right field fence for his second homer of the game as GW extended their lead to 9-2. Following a Temple pitching change, GW tallied seven consecutive base hits, including three straight doubles from Curtis Eward (Oakton, VA/Oakton), Gavin Swanson (Reisterstown, MD/Calvert Hall College HS) and Andrew Haberern (Emmaus, PA/Emmaus/Trinity College). The final run of the inning, and game, was recorded when junior Tim Reeves (Cumming, GA/North Forsyth) drew a bases-loaded walk. Kruer finished the day 3-for-5 with six RBI and two runs. Abokhair was 2-for-4 with three RBI and three runs as he extended his hit-streak to 10 games, as did Swanson, who finished 2-for-3. George Washington (23-23, 9-10 A-10) and Temple (20-23, 11-8 A-10) continue their series Saturday, May 3, at 1:00 p.m.
