Maryland Blasts GW Baseball, 12-3

May 3, 2006

Box Score

COLLEGE PARK, MD - Terrapins' right fielder Matt Maropis came within a single from hitting for the cycle as the senior homered (2), tripled, doubled, drove in two runs and scored twice in The University of Maryland's (21-28) 12-3 victory over George Washington University (18-27) Wednesday night at Shipley Field.

Leading 7-0 in the bottom of the sixth inning, Terps' freshman pinch hitter Dan Benick crushed a grand slam (1) to dead centerfield that put the game out of the Colonials' reach, 12-0. The home run was the first of Benick's collegiate career.

All three GW runs came in the eighth inning when second baseman Michael Parker (Newton, MA / Newton South) tripled and scored on a fielder's choice and centerfielder Matt Owens (Fayetteville, GA / Fayette County) connected for a two-run home run (5).

In his first GW start, senior RHP Justin Prinstein (1-1) was roughed up for eight earned runs in 5.0 innings to suffer his first loss.

Maryland made it a staff day as five pitchers were used in the game, none going more than 3.0 innings. RHP Ryan Moorer started and allowed two hits, struck out three and did no allow a run in 3.0 innings.

LHP John Dischert (4-3) replaced Moorer in the fourth and allowed no runs, one hit and struck out three in two innings to get credit for the win.

Five Terps' batters collected at least two hits including shortstop Steve Braun who went 3-for-4 with two runs and three RBI.

No Colonial had more than one hit in the contest.

GW opens a three-game Atlantic 10 Conference series Friday afternoon at Barcroft Park.

The first pitch is set for 3:00 p.m.

The Colonials will send RHP Derrik Lutz (4-2, 1.24 ERA) to the mound.
