Box Score

ARLINGTON, VA - George Washington University's (18-28, 9-8 A-10) two errors in the sixth inning led to three unearned runs as the Colonials were defeated 7-5 Friday afternoon by Saint Louis University (24-21, 11-8 A-10) in an Atlantic 10 Conference match up at Barcroft Park.

GW held a 3-2 lead after five innings but committed two costly throwing errors in the top of the sixth that contributed to the Billikens' three-run frame and lifted them to a 5-3 lead that they would not relinquish.

First baseman Tim Landy's two-run home run (2) to right centerfield in the eighth inning opened up a 7-3 SLU lead.

The Colonials squandered a number of offensive opportunities including in the ninth inning when they loaded the bases with one out and could not capitalize. Overall, GW stranded 14 runners in the contest.

GW starter RHP Derrik Lutz (4-3) saw his personal four-game winning streak come to an end as he allowed four earned runs on eight hits in the complete-game loss.

Freshman starter RHP Dave Sever (5-3) allowed two earned runs on five hits in 6.0 innings to collect the win for the Billikens. RHP Dan Cowert pitched out of trouble in the ninth inning to pick up the save (1).

SLU left fielder Johnny Sweeney and designated hitter Greg Rodgers connected for back-to-back RBI doubles in the first inning to put the Colonials in an early 2-0 hole.

Catcher Andrew Abokhair's (Ashburn, VA / Broad Run) RBI fielder's choice in the second inning cut GW's deficit in half, 2-1.

GW took a 3-2 advantage in the fourth inning when centerfielder Matt Owens (Fayetteville, GA / Fayette County) and Abokhair led off the fourth inning with singles and executed a double steal to score Owens from third base. Two batters later, right fielder Matt Boyd's (Rockville, MD / Magruder) sacrifice bunt was mishandled and the Colonials plated their third run of the game.

Owens, Abokhair and shortstop Mickey Shupin (Sea Girt, NJ / Wall) each tallied two hits in the contest.

Game two of the three-game conference series is set for Saturday at 1:00 p.m.

GW will send RHP Josh Wilkie (4-3, 2.69 ERA) to the mound.

Prior to the game, the University will hold a brief ceremony to recognize a number of former Colonial players as part of Alumni Day at Barcroft Park.
