KINGSTON, RI - Rhode Island (18-24, 12-8 A-10) got a strong outing from their starting pitcher, James Norcott, to down George Washington (17-29-1, 9-11 A-10) early Saturday afternoon at Bill Beck Field in the second game of their three-game Atlantic 10 Conference series.
Norcott threw a complete-game shutout and allowed just two hits and struck out eight. It was just the third time this season that the Colonials have been shut out in a game. The two hits are the second-fewest for GW in a game this season.
From the beginning, the game was a pitcher's duel. GW starting pitcher Scott Swinson (Ellicott City, MD/Centennial) limited the Rams to just one hit in the first three innings and struck out the side in the first.
Rhode Island opened the scoring in the bottom of the fourth, as they finally got to Swinson, with a Gregg Allen home run to right field, his fourth of the season. Rhody extended their lead to 2-0 in the fifth inning, when Scott Brown doubled off the foul pole in left field to score Dave Savard all the way from first.
In the sixth inning, the Rams added four more runs, all unearned, and all with two outs in the inning. Faizan Choudhry (Langlely, BC/Langley Secondary), pitching in relief of Swinson, retired the first two batters with ground outs, and nearly had the third out of the inning, but an errant throw by shortstop Michael Parker (Newton, MA/Newton South) pulled Tim Reeves (Cumming, GA/North Forsyth) off the bag at first. In all, the Colonials committed three errors in the inning, as Rhody sent nine batters to the plate and recorded four hits.
Swinson's day was done after five innings of work. The freshman scattered five hits, allowed just two runs and struck out eight.
