Baseball Splits Doubleheader With Xavier
Two Colonials Break Records
May 11, 2002
ARLINGTON, VA - GW split an A-10 doubleheader Saturday with the Xavier University Musketeers at Barcroft Park. The Colonials dropped the first game by one run, 2-1, but exploded in the second game to win 13-1. GW is now 37-18 overall and 17-6 in the A-10, while the Musketeers are now 25-25 for the season and 14-8 in the conference.
The first game was marked by solid pitching, both throwing a complete seven-inning game. Junior Adam Jahnsen pitched for the Musketeers. He allowed one run on five hits, while striking out six to pick-up the win. While facing Jahnsen in the bottom of the second, GW senior Mike Bassett (Paramus, NJ/ Paramus) scored the only run of the game for the Colonials on a solo home run blasted over the right field wall. Xavier did not manage to score until the top of the fifth. Jay Johnson singled to score Alec Moss, who had singled to drive in Kevin McKnight and then advanced to second on a passed ball. Those would be Xavier's only runs of the game, scored while facing senior pitcher Jason Baker (Accokeek, MD/DeMatha). Despite the loss, Baker allowed just one earned run on seven hits, while striking out eight batters.
In game two. the Colonials scored a quick first run on a single by senior tri-captain Matt Krimmel (Schnecksville, PA/Parkland) to score junior Jake Wald (Alexandria, VA/T.C. Williams), who had doubled along the right line. In the three-run second inning, Wald stole home to score GW's fourth run. Wald would go two-for-two in the game, while scoring three runs. A lengthy third inning proved to be too much for the Musketeers as GW added 8 runs to lead 12-0. Sophomore Jeff Fertitta (Baltimore, MD/Loyola Blakefield) doubled to center field to score the first two runs of the inning. Fertitta later scored on a single to center field by Wald. Two batters later, Krimmel drove in Wald with a single through the right side. With two runners on, Bassett then hit his second round-tripper of the day, 59th in his career, to score three more runs. The Musketeers managed to score one run in the top of the sixth on a solo homer by Moss. GW added another run on a single by graduate student Nick Iovacchini (Asheville, NC/Ashevlle) in the bottom of the inning to return the lead to 12 runs.
Junior righthander Greg Conden (Owego, NY/Owego) notched the win after pitching six innings and allowing one run on seven hits, while striking out seven batters. With his win, Conden tied Mike Howell's 23 year old GW season record for victories with 10 wins this season.
Bassett broke Ryan Dacey's 186 career runs scored record today with his first home run. He now has scored 189 runs in his GW career.
The Colonials and Musketeers will complete their series on Sunday, May 12, Senior Day, following the recognition of seven senior Colonials. The game begins at noon at Barcroft Park.
