Charlie Kruer's 4 RBI Carries Colonials To 5-4 Comeback Win At Richmond

May 12, 2006

Box Score

RICHMOND, VA - Colonials' left fielder Charlie Kruer (Old Bridge, NJ / Old Bridge) drove in four runs, including the game-winner in the ninth inning, to lead George Washington University (19-30, 10-10 A-10) to a 5-4 come-from-behind victory over the University of Richmond (20-29, 10-12 A-10) Friday afternoon in the first of a three game Atlantic 10 Conference series at Pitt Field.

GW trailed 4-0 through three innings but starter RHP Derrik Lutz (5-3) held the Spiders to just three hits the rest of the way to earn the win and keep the Colonials alive for post season contention. Lutz allowed just two earned runs in the complete-game victory.

Trailing 4-1 in the seventh inning, Kruer came through with a two-run single with two outs to bring the Colonials to within 4-3.

An inning later, catcher Andrew Abokhair (Ashburn, VA / Broad Run) singled, reached second base on a sacrifice bunt and third on a ground out before scoring on a wild pitch to tie the contest, 4-4, in the eighth.

Overall, Kruer went 3-for-4 and Abokhair recorded two hits in three at-bats.

UR was staked to its 4-0 advantage on RBI singles from third baseman Cameron Brown and left fielder Vince Riggi, and a two-run single from right fielder Matt McKenna.

Starter RHP Ja Jones was very effective for the Spiders, allowing one run on four hits in 5.0 innings.

UR reliever RHP Brian Alas (0-4) threw the final 2.0 innings and surrendered both the tying and winning runs to suffer the loss.

The Spiders almost tied the game in the bottom of the ninth when A-10 batting leader Ben Zeskind singled for the third time to lead off the frame.

The senior reached third base with two outs and appeared to be the tying run when Brown grounded a hard roller up the middle but was denied the game-tying RBI when Colonials' second baseman Bryan Hwang (Northvale, NJ / Northvale) made a spectacular diving stop and threw him out for a game-saving play.

The freshman also went 2-for-4 with a run scored.

GW right fielder Mickey Shupin (Sea Girt, NJ / Wall) stole his conference-leading 22nd base in the game.

GW entered the series in a virtual three-way tie with the Spiders and Duquesne for seventh place in the conference, with the top six teams qualifying for post season play.

Game two of the series is scheduled for Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
